“Their gender was never the curse, the land– and the man who tended to it– were the real curse”

Goodreads sysnopsis::

The town of Bishop is known for exactly two things: recurring windstorms and an endless field of sunflowers that stretches farther than the eye can see. And women—missing women. So when three more women disappear one stormy night, no one in Bishop is surprised. The case is closed and their daughters are left in their dusty shared house with the shattered pieces of their lives. Until the wind kicks up a terrible secret at their mothers’ much-delayed memorial.

With secrets come the lies each of the girls is forced to confront. After caring for the other girls, Delilah would like to move on with her boyfriend, Bennett, but she can’t bear his touch. Whitney has already lost both her mother and her girlfriend, Eleanor, and now her only solace is an old weathervane that seems to whisper to her. Jude, Whitney’s twin sister, would rather ignore it all, but the wind kicks up her secret too: the summer fling she had with Delilah’s boyfriend. And more than anything, Bo wants answers and she wants them now. Something happened to their mothers and the townsfolk know what it was. She’s sure of it.

Bishop has always been a strange town. But what the girls don’t know is that Bishop was founded on blood—and now it craves theirs.

Book Review::

🌻 while at home with Covid, I decided to read this book early and review it. What I wasn’t expecting, was becoming so intrigued that I couldn’t stop reading. I loved everything about this book, the found family, forbidden love, the deadly secrets, and the sunflowers (Sunflowers are actually my favorite flowers).  Where darkness blooms is a fast-paced supernatural thriller based in a small town that wants nothing but blood. Where darkness blooms, is told from four perspectives, Delilah, Bo, Jude, and her twin sister Whitney. The four girls lived together well before their mothers went missing, with their mothers missing the girl have to work together to figure out why the small town of Bishop seem to have so many missing women.

🌻 The setting was so eerie and the atmosphere was amazing. The descriptions of the small town and sunflowers are vivid, and what made the town more creepy was that it was surrounded by rows and rows of sunflowers. The reason why the town was full of sunflowers is revealed in the prologue but the rest of the town’s history is a big mystery.

🌻 I loved how diverse the characters were, lesbian relationships, Trans acceptance, and the different races. Without giving too much away, the found family trope is what I really loved. The way the four girls became sisters and protectors of one another was beautiful. If I have to pick my favorite character it would be Bo, she was fierce and she did what it took to defend and protect the sisters she inherited. The last chapters and the epilogue wrap up the story in a beautiful way, and I definitely recommend this book to any YA fans of mystery, thriller, and some horror.

Thank you Netgalley and Wednesday books for providing me with an E-Galley. All thoughts are my own.
